Boost Your Skincare: Steps To Apply Products Properly
From facial treatments to facial packages, they are great to give your skin an added boost in improving your complexion and treat any concerns. But on a daily basis, your skin needs exceptional care to remain healthy, and that depends on how effective your skincare routine is. Each skincare product contains enriching ingredients that need to be absorbed into the skin for the best results. They have to be applied in the right order so you can reap maximum benefits.
Most dermatologists recommend applying skin care products by starting with the density, from the thinnest and then progressing to the thickest. This is due to their permeability, so each product can be fully optimized and absorbed into the skin without hindering each other’s performance.
Here is a guide on how to apply your skincare products in the right order.
Step 1: Cleansing
Why should you start by cleansing? After a night’s rest, your skin is bound to accumulate dirt, hair, oil and other impurities from your pillowcase and hair. Cleansers are designed to remove that. Apply to damp face and neck before massaging in a circular motion for 30 to 60 seconds to let the product work. Rinse with lukewarm water after. If you are wearing makeup, remove it with an oil cleanser or makeup remover, before you proceed to use the cleanser.
Step 2: Toning
Toners help to prep your skin for the next step while helping to remove any leftover residue from your cleanser. They restore the pH levels of your skin so it can effectively absorb the products that follow. Pour several drops of the toner onto a cotton pad and swipe it across your face. You can also choose to pour some on your hands and pat gently into your skin.
Step 3: Serums
Here is where products with potent active and complexion-enhancing ingredients in your regime come in. Antioxidant serums (like Vitamin C), acne spot treatments and leave-on retinols/hydroxy acids contain high concentration formulas that are made to address specific concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne and fine lines. As your skin is already cleansed and prepped, these products can be delivered deep into the skin’s layers without being inhibited. Lightly tap the product into the skin and focus on the areas of concern.
Step 4: Eye cream
Eye creams come in handy to care for the thinnest and most delicate part on your face. They need to go on before you apply any heavier moisturisers. They are formulated to hydrate and reduce puffiness, dark circles, and crow’s feet. Use your pinkie finger to tape around the orbital bone gently (never rub!).
Step 5: Moisturiser
The next step is to apply moisturiser, which can come in various forms such as gels, lotions and creams. They work to protect the skin from dryness, seal in moisture and plump up the skin. Moisturisers are also available in different formulas to cater to different skin types. For instance, a lightweight oil-free moisturiser would be more suitable for oily or combination skin type. Common ingredients include peptides to reinforce the skin’s protective barrier and Hyaluronic acid that helps in maintaining moisture levels. When your skin is well hydrated, this will prevent more oil and sebum to be produced excessively to make up for the lack of hydration. Pat into your face and neck.
Step 6: Sunscreen
For daytime, sunscreen is a crucial inclusion in any skin care regime. This is the last step to help shield your skin and avoid dilution by additional products. In addition to preventing signs of premature ageing, sunscreen also protects from damaging UV rays and lowers your chances of getting skin cancer. A sunscreen with a rating of 30 SPF or higher would be ideal for your skin.
